Heroes III Remake: Insight into the Unit Redesign

Ubisoft has released a new developer blog for the Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake, focusing on one of the community’s most discussed topics: the creature redesign philosophy.

As part of their ongoing faction and art communication track, the development team shared how they are transforming the 2D classic into a fully realized 3D and 4K experience while respecting its legendary legacy.

Preserving the Original Spirit in 3D

Transitioning a classic 2D strategy game with an iconic oil-painting aesthetic into a modern 3D framework requires a delicate balance. Simply converting old sprites into 3D models would make them look flat on modern screens. Instead, the developers have established a strict set of core guidelines:

  • Comprehensive Research & Analysis: The team thoroughly analyzes original faction visuals, lore, unit statistics, combat effects, and original designer notes.
  • Translation to 3D Demands: High-level details are focused on joints, mechanical structures, and material layers, while maintaining iconic silhouettes and poses that fans instantly recognize.
  • Faction Consistency & World-Building: Each faction is given a deeper, more unified shape language and color palette. For instance, the Castle faction draws from historical European architecture and lore to establish a proud and resolute identity.
  • Lore & Credibility Improvements: The team is refining creature anatomy, skeletal logic, and movement behaviors to make the world feel alive and believable—such as rethinking creature ecosystems and behaviors within environments like swamps and dungeons.

Next Steps and Community Feedback

The developers emphasize that community feedback remains a central pillar of the project. Moving forward, the team plans to regularly share concept designs for various factions, gather player thoughts, and release dedicated in-game preview videos showcasing updated factions (with a special look at the Castle faction coming soon).
