22 years of Wake of Gods – In WoG we Trust
The original author of this acknowledgment is Globtroger, who wrote it on Reddit. With his permission I am adding it to the Heroes 3.5 WoG Portal and I completely agree with every word he says. In WoG we Trust.
Today marks 22 years since the release of Heroes 3.5 In the Wake of Gods fan expansion. This post is dedicated as a tribute to Slava Salnikov and the WoG Team for their invaluable contribution to HoMM fandom and the Heroes 3 modding scene.
Seeing so many players are hoping for the much awaited Factory release by HotA Team this new year or some time surrounding that date, I can imagine similar feelings accompanied the WoG release as well as its subsequent patches between 2001 and 2004, a time when many of us younger players were still in diapers, blissfully unaware… 😂
While no longer a dominant force in the current Heroes scene, its presence in the 2000’s and pioneering breakthroughs in game modding remain undisputedly legendary to this day.
In the years following the final WoG Team release (3.58F on the 3rd of November 2004), WoG has undergone many structural changes. The fabled 3.59 release, which promised similar advancements to those currently offered by HOTA such as an additional town, never came to fruition. Despite the dissolution of the original team in 2008 and of the succeeding team also in 2012, WoG development is more active now than ever. Currently hosted on the ERA platform (but also VCMII), WoG lives on, surrounded by many other mods and extensions which it fathered, expanding and improving everyday.
Master of Puppets and Legacy of the Silence are examples of its offspring, while Third Upgrades Mod and Advanced Classes are perhaps among the most prominent forces in the current WoG scene.
With that said, I’d like to conclude. Thank you WoG Team and all current developers for your time and effort and vision in making WoG a reality and the legend that it is today.
Will it live to see another 20 years? Only time can tell. -by Globtroger
