Movement & Exploration – HoMM: Olden Era Begginer’s Guide #2
By default, most of the map is covered by the Fog of War, which obscures the landscape and hides objects. To lift the fog, you move your Hero, revealing new areas and interacting with unique objects that uncover more of the world.
Movement
To move a Hero, double-click on the map using the left mouse button. The first click will mark the map with your path, and the second click will move the Hero to that marked spot.
Moving your Hero consumes Movement Points. Each faction has its own native terrain that its heroes have no movement penalties traveling through. Some types of terrain will be much costlier to travel through than others.
Sticking to roads will also reduce the Movement Points needed!
Routes
You can only plot a route through areas that are not hidden by the fog of war. Obstacles and enemy armies block movement and prevent route planning. Depending on the movement target, the route will be highlighted in different colors:
- Green – a regular route that can be fully traveled this turn.
- Grey – your Hero does not have enough Movement Points to reach the target.
- Red – Movement will end in a battle with an enemy army or garrison.
Map objects
As you explore the world, you’ll come across a variety of Map Objects, buildings and items your Hero can interact with. Hovering over any Map Object will display a description, helping you decide whether it’s currently useful to interact.
Ownable Objects
Some interactable objects have an owner – the player who last interacted with them. These objects are marked with the flag of the owner who currently controls the object. Ownable Objects include:
- Cities – Sites where you’ll build buildings, recruit Creatures, and unlock spells.
- Mines – Generate resources for your treasury on a daily basis.
- Creature Dwellings – allows you to hire reinforcements, and increases the weekly growth of the corresponding Creatures in your Cities.
Neutrals
On the Global Map, you will come across Neutral Squads, hostile Creatures that guard valuable items, important objects, or passageways to new territories. Hover over the Squad to see the Creature Types and the estimated number of said Creatures you will face.
Also, pay attention to the estimated difficulty of the battle – this indicator shows how challenging the encounter is likely to be for your selected Hero.
I hate Portals
You will also encounter Portals – special objects that instantly transport Heroes to another location, revealing unexplored or remote areas of the map. These Portals are usually guarded by a Neutral Squad – defeat them, and you’ll have unrestricted access to it.
7 Days
In Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, gameplay is divided into days, weeks, and months. To succeed, you’ll need to use your resources wisely each day:
- Move your heroes, keeping in mind their limited Movement Points.
- Explore the map and interact with important objects.
- Recruit Creatures to strengthen your Heroes’ armies and unlock new areas of the map.
- Construct new buildings in your Cities.
At the beginning of each day, several important events take place:
- Heroes’ Movement Points are fully restored.
- You can construct new buildings in your Cities.
- Temporary effects may activate or expire, depending on their duration.
Every 7 days, a new week begins, and every 4 weeks, a new month begins. With the start of every new week, your Creature Growth produces a number of new Creatures in your cities and at any Creature Dwellings.
To start a new day, click the End Day button in the bottom right corner of your screen.
