Horn of the Abyss v1.8 with Bulwark town and Runes skill was released

The HotA team has prepared a brand-new update for the community: Horn of the Abyss 1.8.0, released as a New Year’s gift. This version introduces two major innovations at the same time.

The most prominent addition is, of course, the new town — Bulwark, the third faction introduced in Horn of the Abyss. Its long and winding journey from initial concept to final release spanned nearly two decades. Now completed, Bulwark allows players to finally experience a faction that has been part of the project’s vision throughout its entire history as well as the Runes faction-specific skill.

bulwark runes skillBulwark represents the inhabitants of the frozen island of Vori: Snow Elves, Jotunns, Yeti, and Kobolds, joined by their steadfast allies — Argali and Mammoths. Their bravery and unique abilities, bestowed by mysterious forces hidden within the eternal snows, have become the subject of legends and songs.

Work on the campaign, which will tell the story of Vori from ancient times to the present era of Enroth, is still ongoing. However, the HotA team decided not to delay the town’s release solely for this reason.

The second major feature of the update is the extended event system, designed to give map creators far greater freedom when crafting scenarios. Events and quests can now be created in Seer Huts, featuring complex conditions and a wide variety of effects. By using variables, events can influence one another, allowing player decisions to shape the future behavior of the entire map. A user-friendly graphical interface was developed to create and manage these events. This feature took over two years to complete, and the team is proud to present the results.

Bug Report. I just downloaded and am trying out the scenario ‘Maelstrom’.
I have played Maelstrom many times before. It’s an L map with 6 factions that you can choose or play randomly.
On this scenario, choosing your faction usually is not a problem. You are supposed to be able to choose your starting town. But I find that with Bulwark, on 4 out of 6 positions I can’t get Bulwark. Meaning I choose Bulwark and wind up without a Bulwark town near my starting position. Tried 3 times.
The other 2 positions I only tried twice each. 1 position I got Bulwark town twice. 1 position I got Bulwark town once and didn’t get the town the other time.

Bulwark to me is rough addition.

I firstly disliked Factory too but now it seems like Factory is very and very professionally made town.

    Sorry, if my opinion hurts.

For me Cove seemed the most natural town added to the game, Factory and Bulwark seem strange. I prefer the visuals of Factory, but not their lineup. That Steampunk feel is not something I really enjoy, I don’t dislike it, but it’s not very interesting.

For Bulwark the thing that bothers me is purely cosmetic – the town screen seems too dark. Same with Cove. I think both would’ve looked much better if they had a day setting. Bulwark can still look colder and more frigid than Tower during the day and Cove with a noon sky, similar to Booty Bay from World of Warcraft would have been much better.

At the end of the day, I had great fun with HoTA over the years, I enjoyed its novelty and changes, but somehow I grew bored with it and prefer instead to play HoMM3 ERA with the mods it offers, it feels much more liberating as well as changes gameplay more, HoTA’s gameplay changes are rather minimal and while some may think it’s enough, for me it quickly got too boring.
