Heroes 3: Day of Reckoning mod CD-Action Update
Day of Reckoning mod has received another major update. Following the publication of the second issue of the Polish CD-Action magazine dedicated to the Heroes of Might and Magic series, the development team revealed a large amount of new information and screenshots from the project.
One of the biggest new features is the introduction of alternative units, designed to provide additional strategic options. Each new town will have two alternative units, while the original Heroes III towns will receive one alternative unit each. These alternatives are intended to offer different playstyles while remaining roughly comparable in overall strength to the original units.
Among the newly revealed Day of Reckoning units are the Berserker, an alternative to the Orc Chieftain, and the Paladin, an alternative to the Archangel. The new Palace town also received two new units, Tomte and Einherjar, while other revealed units include the Fungoid Symbiote, Coeurl Prowler, and two basic Forge units, the Foot Soldier and Saboteur.
The Astral Simurgh, an alternative seventh-level Tower unit, also received considerable attention. This enormous mythological creature replaces the option of having another ranged unit with another flying unit. Its design combines elements of a harpy, eagle, and peacock.
The team also presented a new version of the Forge town screen, which is still under development. Forge has a post-apocalyptic industrial atmosphere, drawing inspiration from dieselpunk and rustpunk. Interestingly, the town’s background is based on one of the old promotional illustrations created for Armageddon’s Blade by New World Computing.
Another town shown for the first time in high resolution was Grotto, home of the Dark Elves. Its visual style combines pink, black, and gold, with inspiration coming from Might and Magic VIII, and Menzoberranzan from Forgotten Realms. A new Grotto hero, Yame the Sorcerer, was also revealed.
New battle screenshots showcased additional units and mechanics. The Inferno faction will receive Concubines and their upgraded version, Succubi, giving the town another ranged unit. The Snow Elves of Palace, meanwhile, have an ability that allows them to react to enemy ranged attacks before taking damage.
A new terrain type for Forge was also revealed: Barrens, a polluted wasteland created by industrial activity. One of the battles shown on this terrain featured the new Forge seventh-level unit, the Juggernaut, inspired by the security robots from the Might and Magic universe. It is intended to be one of the strongest individual seventh-level creatures in the game, but will have a high cost and low production rate.
Grotto was also shown with several of its creatures, including Gnome Lampades, Dark Elves, Dusk Elves, Fungoids, Raptors, and Crimson Arachnes. Rampart will receive the Hamadryad as an alternative to the Silver Pegasus, with a special synergy with Dendroids.
The update also included new adventure-map objects, mines, creature dwellings, decorations, mountains, a new portrait for Jinara, an important character in Gelu’s campaign, and another updated version of the Palace town.
Day of Reckoning continues to look like one of the most ambitious fan projects ever created for Heroes of Might and Magic III. While the development team has not announced a release date yet, the amount of new content being revealed shows that development is continuing actively.
