Heroes V (Prototype demo US, June 2004)
I finally managed to get my hands on a playable prototype version of Heroes V (thanks to Niven). If I were to travel back in time to 2004 and see how much progress the game had made since the fourth installment from 2002, I would be genuinely impressed. The playable demo features the Haven town, which looks different from its final in-game version, as well as the beginning of the campaign with a short introduction that has not yet been voiced.
Even from this small slice, the enormous progress the game made is clearly visible — and it had to make it, as all games were transitioning to 3D at the time. Still, I remain of the opinion that 2D is the best presentation for turn-based strategy games and battles.
