fHeroes2 Online – play Heroes 2 in browser
A fan has been working on a mod of fheroes2, the open-source Heroes II engine, and has now made it available for others to try. The mod runs directly in a web browser, so there’s nothing to install.

The project builds on the work of the fheroes2 team, with several new features added:
- Online multiplayer – Players can challenge friends in battles, compete in knockout tournaments for 3–8 players, or play entire scenarios (still experimental). Open games appear in a public lobby, or players can invite others using a shared code.
- Battle campaigns– Players can choose one of the six factions, spend hero points to build their commander, and fight through six battles against armies that are stronger on paper. The mod also includes a campaign editor, allowing players to create and share their own campaigns as text files.
- Trained battle AI (“Deep AI”) – The AI wins approximately 96% of mirror matches against the standard fheroes2 battle AI when both sides use identical random armies. It handles battles only, while the adventure map continues to use the standard AI.
-
Seasonal themes – One particularly charming feature is the addition of seasonal themes. For example, until November 1, units can sport Halloween pumpkins or witch hats instead of their usual heads. It’s a fun little touch that adds some seasonal spirit to the game. Of course, players can disable these effects in the settings if they prefer the original look.
The mod uses the free data from the original 1996 demo, so it features the demo’s content rather than the full game. This is a hobby project that is still a work in progress. The creator welcomes feedback, especially bug reports and opinions on whether the Deep AI provides a satisfying challenge or simply becomes frustrating.
