30 years of Heroes of Might and Magic: A journey through a Legendary series
As we step into 2025, fans of the Heroes of Might and Magic series have much to celebrate. This year marks the 30th anniversary of one of the most iconic turn-based strategy franchises in gaming history.
From its humble beginnings in 1995 (or in 1990 if we take into account King’s Bounty) to its eagerly anticipated new installment, Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, set to release later this year. Heroes series has captivated players with its deep gameplay, memorable characters like Sandro, Solmyr, Craag Hack etc., and timeless appeal. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit the milestones of this legendary series.
The Origins: King’s Bounty (1990)
The history of Heroes of Might and Magic began in 1990 with King’s Bounty, designed by Jon Van Caneghem. This turn-based strategy game laid the groundwork for what would later become the Heroes series, featuring a hero exploring a fantasy world, recruiting troops, and engaging in battles on a battlefield.
Though simpler than its successors, King’s Bounty introduced many of the mechanics that would define Heroes of Might and Magic, making it the spiritual predecessor of the franchise.
Heroes of Might and Magic I: A Strategic Birth (1995)
The game that started it all, Heroes I, introduced players to a turn-based world where heroes led armies, gathered resources, and conquered territories. Its simplicity laid the groundwork for everything that followed.
Heroes of Might and Magic II: The Succession Wars (1996)
Building on its predecessor, Heroes II expanded the series with improved graphics, richer storylines, and the introduction of new factions like Necromancers and Wizards. Its whimsical art style and challenging campaigns made it an instant classic.
Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Restoration of Erathia (1999)
Often hailed as the pinnacle of the series, Heroes III delivered a perfect balance of gameplay depth and accessibility. Featuring diverse factions, iconic music, and a vibrant world, it remains a favorite among fans and the definitive benchmark for turn-based strategy games.
Heroes Chronicles: The Story of Tarnum (2000-2001)
Between Heroes III and Heroes IV, Heroes Chronicles offered a unique take on the franchise. This series of eight story-driven campaigns followed Tarnum, a warrior cursed with immortality, as he fought for redemption across different lands. While mechanically similar to Heroes III, the Chronicles focused on storytelling and introduced new players to the rich lore of the series.
Heroes of Might and Magic IV: A New Dawn (2002)
Heroes IV introduced radical changes, allowing heroes to fight directly in battles. While divisive among fans, it offered fresh mechanics and memorable campaigns.
Heroes of Might and Magic V: A 3D Evolution (2006)
The series embraced 3D graphics with Heroes V, bringing the world of Ashan to life. With refined mechanics and stunning visuals, the game successfully revived the franchise for a new generation.
Might & Magic: Heroes VI (2011)
Breaking from tradition, Heroes VI introduced new gameplay systems, including customizable heroes and town conversion. Despite mixed reviews, it further expanded the lore of Ashan and experimented with modern mechanics.
Might & Magic: Heroes VII (2015)
The most recent main entry aimed to blend classic gameplay with modern design. While it struggled with technical issues at launch, it retained the series’ core charm and offered dedicated fans a nostalgic experience.
Looking to the future: Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era (2025)
In 2025, the saga continues with Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era. Promising to combine the beloved elements of classic titles with innovative features, the game is set to rekindle the magic that made the series a legend. Fans can expect a return to the strategic roots of the franchise while embracing modern advancements in gameplay and storytelling.
