Magic in HoMM: Olden Era is split into sour schools that have been founded by their respective scholars. Arina, Naira, Hksmilla and Doreath.
Daylight Magic, founded by Arina, is a school of magic that focuses on buffing allied creatures and punishing enemies for attacking them. It’s the best choice for those who wish to empower their armies.
Nightshade magic, developed by Naira, is the opposite of Daylight magic. It focuses on weakening enemies, denying them tools to act, and turning them against one another. If you want to feel in control of what your opponent does, this school of magic is made exactly for you.
Primal Magic, inherited from Hksmilla, gathers the elemental powers of the world into one school. Its primary focus being direct damage spells. It’s also the place for those who wish to protect their army from said spells.
For the local end of the world, please head in this direction.
Arcane Magic, mastered by Doreath, is the last school on the list and specializes in utility and unconventional spells, as well as focus manipulation. Want to teleport your hydras over the walls? Master the Arcane and shape the battlefield to your will.
To conclude, magic in Olden Era is a mixture of old and familiar systems with a breadth of fresh ideas. Certain aspects of magic have been made more approachable and balanced, while making sure that personal skill expression can shine through the player’s decision making. And the gap between might and magic skills is not as severe as in previous games.
