HoMM: Olden Era – Creatures overview with alternative upgrades

As a lifelong Heroes of Might and Magic fan (and especially Heroes III), few things excite me more than seeing the series brought back to life in fresh ways. Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era is one of those rare projects that feels both faithful to the classics and ambitious enough to carve its own path and yes, I also like the fairytale graphic style of the game, like Heroes 1 & 2 had.

I recently had the chance to play a preview build, and finally I can show you some of the videos without any restrictions.

Olden Era is being developed as a full-fledged prequel to the Heroes series, exploring the continent of Jadame and re-imagining what made the formula so compelling: hex-based tactical battles, diverse factions with unique playstyles, and the kind of world-building that draws you in for “just one more turn.” And let’s not forget the music — yes, Paul Anthony Romero is back, and together with Cris Velasco and the Heroes Orchestra!

The Four Factions I Played – Temple, Necropolis, Dungeon and Schism

The preview build focused on four factions, each with its own style:

  • TempleA religious order of gallant knights, noble footsoldiers, and mighty griffins, seeking to bring order to a new realm.
  • Necropolis – True to tradition, the undead thrive here. Vampire are level 7 creatures, linally! Liches look fragile at first glance, but their draining and weakening abilities quickly turn battles.
  • Dungeon – A dark coalition of elves, minotaurs, medusae, and hydras. This was one of my favorites.
  • Schism – By far the strangest faction. Schism calls forth horrors from the Plane Between Planes, creatures that feel unpredictable and eerie.

In the video below, you’ll find a full showcase of all the creatures from Temple, Necropolis, Dungeon, and Schism, complete with their upgrades and special skills from Olden Era preview build.

Altgrades are musthave, I presume, in every new Heroes game, just like 3D town screens.
