Cove town evolution – Horn of the Abyss

The pirate town Cove is without a doubt one of the most captivating additions to the Heroes of Might and Magic III, introduced through the fan-made expansion Horn of the Abyss. What makes it truly remarkable is not only the thematic originality—bringing pirates, sea creatures, and naval warfare into the game—but also the long and carefully crafted development process behind it.

Over the years, Cove has gone through several visual and conceptual iterations. Early versions had a rougher look, with placeholder graphics and less cohesive architectural styles. However, with each update, the town’s design became more polished and integrated into the overall aesthetic of the game. The artists and designers paid close attention to blending Cove into the original HoMM III visual language.

Today, Cove town stands out with its vibrant colors, dynamic town screen, and unique lineup of units that feel both balanced and innovative. Personally, I find the version that manages to preserve the classic, retro feeling of the original game—while also embracing more refined, modern visuals—especially satisfying. It’s a rare example of a fan-made addition that feels like it could have been there from the start.
