Even today, 26 years after its release, you can easily play Heroes of Might and Magic III with a friend on the other side of the country or the world. All you need is the GOG version of Heroes 3 Complete and the HD Mod, which, besides the Online Lobby, also offers a large number of quality-of-life improvements.

What you’ll need

• A legal copy of Heroes III Complete (often purchased via GOG).
• Heroes Launcher makes installing and managing Heroes of Might and Magic III mods easier than ever.
• Both (or all) players must use the same version of the game and HD mod, to avoid version mismatches.

How to play Heroes 3 online:

1. Open the Heroes Launcher and select SoD, then click Install.
2. Next, choose the folder where your GOG version of Heroes 3 Complete is installed and click Start Installation.
3. Now click on the gear icon and select HD Mod settings.
4. At the bottom, click Update.
5. It’s important that all players have the same version of the HD mod.
6. Make sure the HD+ option is checked — this enables access to the Online Lobby — and that Heroes3.exe is selected in the top-left corner.
7. You can now click Play.
8. In the game, choose New Game, then Multiplayer, and click the large ONLINE LOBBY button.
9. Create an account and log in.
10. You are now in the Heroes 3 ONLINE LOBBY, which is the same lobby used for both Horn of the Abyss and the ERA Project.
11. Click the NEW GAME button, enter the game name, password, and number of players, then click the checkmark to confirm.
12. Once all players are connected, you can choose the template and factions you want to play — or simply leave everything to random selection.
13. Click BEGIN — here, the game will give you the option to ban certain map objects (such as obelisks or cartographers), enable simultaneous turns, and adjust other settings.
14. When you’re ready, click the checkmark to start the game.
15. And that’s it — you’re in the game! I’ll just click around a bit for demonstration purposes.
16. As you can see, playing Heroes 3 online is very simple — there’s no need for Hamachi or any similar programs.
