The Legend of the Werewolf

If my memory serves me right, the Werewolf does not appear in the Heroes of Might & Magic series (not counting the Might & Magic dungeon-crawling RPGs, where I have seen it). It was only introduced by the unofficial expansion In The Wake of Gods as an interesting neutral unit. This unit has a 20% chance (40% if there is a full moon) to transform an enemy unit into a Werewolf. This transformation can cause an unexpected twist in battle, especially if you use it on level 6 or 7 units.

The Legend of the Werewolf

In folklore and mythology, a werewolf is a human who temporarily transforms into a wolf under certain circumstances (mainly at night), behaves like a wolf, and commits various evil deeds. Occultism defines a werewolf in a similar way: a person who intentionally, by magical ritual or under the influence of lunar or demonic forces, transforms into a wolf for a certain period of time. After the transformation, the person usually remembers nothing, feels exhausted, and falls into a deep sleep for several hours.

In various folk beliefs and legends, the werewolf is seen as a wolf demon bound to a human body. Vampires are also said to often take the form of a wolf. By contrast, werewolves are supposedly an independent, ancient race that has inhabited the Earth since time immemorial.

The foreign word for “werewolfism” is lycanthropy (lycos — wolf, anthropos — human), which from today’s medical perspective refers to the delusion of mentally ill people who believe they have transformed into wild animals, especially wolves. From a modern “alternative” perspective, it is seen as a peculiar state of mind and consciousness where a person imagines they are a wolf or that they transform into one.
