It turns out that a clever homebrew approach may allow Heroes of Might and Magic III to run on a Sony PSP using an x86 emulation layer. On Reddit, a developer shared that they’ve been working on an emulator capable of bringing classic PC games, including HoMM III, to the PSP platform. One proof-of-concept video demonstrates the game running on actual PSP hardware.

According to the developer, the emulator converts x86 instructions into MIPS32 code (which the PSP uses) at runtime, and once a block is translated, subsequent loads are faster. The same project already supports Fallout I & II, Heroes II, and other older PC titles.
However, there are caveats. Performance and compatibility vary by PSP model (it’s reportedly tested on PSP-2000 and PSP-3000). Controls, UI scaling, memory constraints, and graphics rendering all pose challenges. It might be easier to use VCMI on a phone instead of trying it via PSP emulation.
So far, these games run smoothly:
- Fallout 1 (1997)
- Fallout 2 (1998)
- Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines (1998)
- Railroad Tycoon II (1998)
- Heroes of Might and Magic II (1996)
- Heroes of Might and Magic III (1999)
- Full Throttle (1995)
Running laggy/slower:
- Grand Theft Auto (1997, should run smoothly)
- Carmageddon Splat Pack (1998, should run smoothly)
- Baldur’s Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast (1999)
- Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (1998)
- Might and Magic 6 (1998)
Can run, but super slow (development needed):
- Diablo 2 (2000)
- Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri (1999)
