Erathia is the largest kingdom on the continent of Antagarich, located on the planet Enroth. It has long been ruled by the Gryphonheart dynasty and is predominantly inhabited by humans. The kingdom’s capital city is Steadwick. In Heroes of Might and Magic III, Erathia is represented by the Castle faction.
Erathia has a long and often turbulent history with its northern neighbor, the elven realm of AvLee, with which it fought numerous wars over the forests rich in timber, crucial for crafting weapons — especially bows. This conflict culminated in the protracted Timber War, leaving vast regions devastated and eventually turning them into what is known today as the Contested Lands.
In 1164 AS, tragedy struck when King Nicolas Gryphonheart was poisoned by Lord Haart, plunging the kingdom into chaos and leaving it vulnerable to its opportunistic neighbors. From the west, Tatalia (Fortress) and Krewlod (Stronghold) launched invasions; from the south, the combined armies of Eeofol (Inferno) and Nighon (Dungeon) pressed into Erathian lands; while from the north, the necromancers of Deyja (Necropolis) advanced into the heart of the realm.
It was during this time of turmoil that Queen Catherine Ironfist, daughter of King Nicolas and wife of Roland Ironfist of Enroth, returned to her homeland to reclaim her father’s throne and restore order. This campaign, known as The Restoration of Erathia, forms the central plot of the original Heroes of Might and Magic III. The famous opening (unskippable) cinematic shows Catherine landing with her loyal troops, gathering support from loyal nobles and retaking lost lands step by step.
Her first objective was to regain control over scattered Erathian territories to build enough strength for a decisive march on Steadwick — the capital city that, for the first time in Erathia’s proud history, had fallen to enemy hands. In this desperate struggle, Catherine found allies in the armies of AvLee and the wizard kingdom of Bracada, who joined her cause to repel the necromancers, demons, and barbarian invaders threatening all of Antagarich.
