10 creatures I miss in HoMM: Olden Era

Many of you have probably already spent quite a few hours playing Olden Era, exploring its four available factions in the demo version. Here’s my personal take on some classic creatures from the Heroes of Might and Magic universe that haven’t yet made an appearance in Olden Era, at least not for now.

So, let’s speculate a little about which creatures might one day appear in future expansions (if Olden Era continues to be successful).

Manticore

A classic mythological beast that has been part of the Dungeon faction in Heroes III. In Olden Era, I could imagine the Manticore as a neutral creature roaming the desert regions.

I’d prefer the Heroes III design without the human head, which always looked a bit odd to me.

Gameplay-wise, it could even become a ranged unit, firing poisonous projectiles as was once planned for Heroes III before the idea was dropped.

Basilisk

If a Basilisk were added, we’d definitely need Bron as well! I’d love to see the Heroes III design return — that green, dinosaur-like creature with three pairs of legs and a petrifying gaze.

Please, no Harry Potter or Heroes V versions here!

Golems

One of my all-time favorites across the Heroes series. The Heroes III golems were especially fascinating: stone, iron, gold, diamond, and even the steel version later added in Horn of the Abyss. A slow but resilient unit that could withstand enormous damage.

However, Olden Era already includes a similar tank-type creature, the Iryad of the Sylvan faction, so the Golem might overlap a bit in gameplay terms.

Dwarf

What would a Heroes game be without at least one hammer / axe-wielding dwarf, resistant to magic with new ability to capable of slashing through higher-tier foes? A small but mighty addition that deserves a comeback.

Unicorn

A timeless classic — peaceful, majestic, and magical. The Unicorn could easily return as a powerful neutral unit, retaining its signature ability to blind enemies after an attack, just like in Heroes III.

Efreet

Since Olden Era already features Octavia, who is an Efreet, why not have efreets in the army too?

They could be fast, fiery, and aggressive, protected by a Fire Shield, but with only average HP, true glass cannons of the desert.

Gorgon

This one’s a bit tricky, since Olden Era’s Dungeon heroes already ride them instead of horses.

Still, the Mighty Gorgon could return as a standalone high-tier creature, retaining its legendary death stare that instantly kills powerful enemies.

Naga / Rakshasas

An iconic Tower unit from Heroes III — six arms mean six swords! Alternatively, Olden Era could introduce Rakshasas from Heroes V as a spiritual successor.

Either way, these creatures would fit perfectly alongside Manticores as guardians of desert treasures.

Crystal Dragon

My absolute favorite type of dragon! It could return in its crystal form, or perhaps as a lava variant like in Heroes V.

The only requirement: no wings — that’s part of what makes it unique.

Leprechaun

This cheerful fellow has appeared on the adventure map since Heroes II and III, but only became a recruitable unit in Heroes IV and Horn of the Abyss.

He could return as a support unit, capable of casting simple beneficial spells.

Bonus: Dragons. Lots of Dragons.

Mechanical dragons, azure dragons, gold dragons, emerald dragons… just more dragons, please. 😄
